Going to the fortune-teller, the soothsayer, and the like, and asking them

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 1955 ):
Q: A disagreement arose between two people regarding a religious issue. One of them said: I heard that if a person has a sick relative and goes to a doctor to prescribe a treatment, whether it is an ointment, a drink, cauterization, or cupping, there is no harm in taking it and acting upon it, even if the one he goes to is a sorcerer, provided the medicine is permissible, for actions are by intentions. The other said: I do not believe that going to one known for sorcery and magic is anything but disbelief or the invalidation of one's deeds, even if the medicine is permissible; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741 (peace and blessings be upon him), and that if he goes to him and asks him, even if he does not believe him, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights. That is: his deeds for forty days are invalidated. And since we are in dire need of a solution to this problem, please issue a ruling for us.
A: Going to the fortune-teller, the soothsayer, and the like, and asking them is not permissible, and if one believes them, the sin is even greater; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 2230 narrated by Muslim, and what is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in Muslim also, from the hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami , regarding the prohibition of going to fortune-tellers. And what the compilers of the Sunan and al-Hakim narrated from
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam) (peace and blessings be upon him), and other hadiths in this chapter. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
