The Reciter: And Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Abu Kuraib narrated to us, both saying: Abu Mu'awiyyah narrated to us. And Abu Kuraib and Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, with the wording belonging to Abu Kuraib, both saying: Waki' narrated to us, both of them from al-A'mash, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said:
the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) combined the noon prayer with the afternoon prayer and the sunset prayer with the 'Isha' prayer in Medina without being in a state of danger or rainfall جمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم بين الظهر والعصر والمغرب والعشاء بالمدينة في غير خوف ولا مطر
Sahih Muslim 705d
In the narration of Waki', it was said: I asked Ibn Abbas, "Why did he do that?" He said: "So that he would not cause hardship for his Ummah." And in the narration of Abu Mu'awiyyah, it was said to Ibn Abbas: "What was his intention in doing that?" He said: "He intended not to cause hardship for his Ummah."
