The reciter: Shall I read?
The Shaykh : Yes, indeed.
So Ibn 'Abbas came and asked him about the witr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Ibn 'Abbas said: Shall I direct you to the most knowledgeable person on earth regarding the witr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Who is that? He said: 'A'ishah. Go to her and ask her, then come back to me and tell me her response to you. So I went to her, and I came upon Hakim ibn Aflah and asked him to accompany me to her. He said: I am not going to approach her, because I forbade her from saying anything about these two groups, but she insisted on proceeding with them. He said: So I swore an oath to him, and he came. We went to 'A'ishah and asked for permission to enter, and she gave us permission, so we entered upon her. She said: Is it Hakim? He recognized her, so he said: Yes. She said: Who is with you? He said: Sa'd ibn Hisham. She said: Which Hisham? He said: Ibn 'Amir. So she offered a prayer for him and said good things. Qatadah said: He had been struck on the Day of Uhud. So I said: O Mother of the Believers, inform me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Do you not read the Qur'an? I said: Yes. She said: Then the character of the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the Qur'an. He said: I was about to stand up and not ask anyone about anything until I die, but then it occurred to me, so I said: Inform me about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Do you not read "O you who wraps himself in garments"? I said: Yes. She said: Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made the night prayer obligatory in the beginning of this surah, so the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions stood in night prayer for a year, and Allah withheld its conclusion in the heavens for twelve months until Allah revealed the easing in the end of this surah, so the night prayer became voluntary after being obligatory. .
