A person who intended to perform Hajj with his own money, but before entering the state of ihram, had his money stolen: will he be recorded as having the reward of Hajj, and is the obligation lifted from him?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He intended to perform Hajj with his own money and set out before entering the state of ihram, but his money was stolen and he was unable to perform Hajj. Will he be recorded as having the reward of Hajj, and is this obligation lifted from him?

The Shaykh : As for being recorded as having the reward of Hajj, this is hoped for from Allah the Exalted, based on His saying:
And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him - his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah ومن يخرج من بيته مهاجراً إلى الله ورسوله ثم يدركه الموت فقد وقع أجره على الله
[An-Nisa 4:100]
As for the lifting of the obligation of Hajj from him, it is lifted from him for this year because he has no money. If Allah provides him with money, it is obligatory for him to perform Hajj.
