Explanation of the Book of Hajj-08b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abdullah ibn Muslimah narrated to us, Malik narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal from Urwah from Zaynab, the daughter of Umm Salama, from Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) who said:
Umm Salama said that she complained to God’s messenger of being ill, and he told her to perform the circumambulation behind the people riding. She did so, and God’s messenger was praying towards the side of the House and reciting, “By at-Tur and a Book inscribed.”( Qur’an, 52. The text here has bit-Tur , whereas the Qur’an has wat-Tur . Bukhari has wat- Tur in Hajj, 64, but he has bit-Tur ,in Salat, 78, Hajj, 74, and Tafsir Surat at-Tur, 1).

The Shaykh : His statement: "The chapter on the sick person circumambulating while riding," indicates that circumambulating while riding is not permissible except for an excuse, such as a sick person, an elderly person, a lame person, a paralyzed person, or a person of weak constitution who cannot withstand the crowd, and the like. The important point is that it must be for an excuse, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) circumambulated on a camel out of fear of being harmed, so how about one who cannot do so? Accordingly, we say: It is a condition for circumambulation that the one circumambulating be walking, and it is not permissible to circumambulate while being carried, or on a camel, or in a vehicle, except for an excuse.
The students: ...

The Shaykh : That he be riding was a slip of the tongue; it should be walking. It is obligatory that he be walking, and it is not permissible for him to be riding except for an excuse. It is not permissible to be riding except for an excuse. If someone were to ask: What do you say if this person who is circumambulating starts the circumambulation, and then, in the calm and quiet, he falls asleep and does not wake up until he is told, "O so-and-so, pray two rak'ahs behind the Maqam"? What is the ruling? The ruling is that it suffices for him. If we say that ritual purity is not a condition, it is clear. And if we say that ritual purity is a condition, we look at whether he slept a deep sleep such that if he had passed wind, he would not have felt it; in that case, the circumambulation is not valid, because his ablution was broken. But if it was a light sleep, meaning he dozed off but could hear speech and would hear if anything happened to him, then his circumambulation is valid. Yes.
