The reciter: Hajjaj ibn Minhāl narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us from Abū Ishaq, he said: I heard Amr ibn Maimun say: Bulugh al-Maram 759.
The Shaykh : The polytheists in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to depart from ‘Arafah when the sun was on the tops of the mountains like turbans on the heads of men, meaning it was about to set, so they would depart before the sun set. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) opposed them and remained until the sun set, even though departing before sunset is easier, but it was to oppose the polytheists. In Muzdalifah, it was the opposite; they would delay, saying, “Thubayr has brightened so that we may change,” meaning so that we may depart. This is not an extra word; the meaning is “so that we may depart.” Thubayr is a large, well-known mountain among the mountains there; it is the highest and tallest. The sun becomes visible on its peak before it becomes visible on what surrounds it. As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he opposed them, but he opposed them in a way that showed kindness to the Ummah. He did not delay until the sun appeared for the high and the low, but he advanced, because that is more kind to the Ummah, may peace and blessings be upon him. From this, we know that it is obligatory for us to oppose the polytheists in their way and not to agree with them in their way, especially in acts of worship, because the matter is a great danger. Yes, Fu’ad.
The pagans did not use to depart from Muzdalifah until the sun had risen, and they would say, ‘Let the sun shine on Thabir (the highest mountain in Makkah). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) contradicted them and departed from Muzdalifah before sunrise.
The Shaykh : The polytheists in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to depart from ‘Arafah when the sun was on the tops of the mountains like turbans on the heads of men, meaning it was about to set, so they would depart before the sun set.
