The reciter: It was narrated to me by Yahya ibn Bukayr, who said: Al-Layth narrated to us from 'Aqil from Ibn Shihab, who said: Mahmud ibn al-Rabi' al-Ansari informed me
That 'Utbah ibn Malik, who was one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and one of the Ansar who witnessed the Battle of Badr, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my eyesight has weakened while I am praying for my people. When it rains, the wadi between me and them floods, and I am unable to come to their mosque to pray with them. I wish, O Messenger of Allah, that you would come and pray in my house so that I may take it as a place of prayer." He said: "I will do so, if Allah wills." 'Utbah said: "So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr came to me in the morning when the sun had risen. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked permission to enter, and I gave it to him. He did not sit down until he had entered the house. Then he said to me: 'Where would you like me to pray in your house?' I pointed to a corner of the house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, said the takbir, and we formed rows. He prayed two rak'ahs and then gave the salam. We detained him for a meal of 'ukhdur (a type of porridge) that we had prepared. Then a group of men from the household, a considerable number, gathered in the house. One of them said: 'Where is Malik ibn al-Dakhshun?' Some of them said: 'That is a hypocrite who does not love Allah and His Messenger.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do not say that. Do you not see that he says, "There is no god but Allah," seeking thereby the Face of Allah?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' We said: 'But we see his face and his inclination toward the hypocrites.' He said: 'Indeed, Allah has forbidden the Fire to enter anyone who says, "There is no god but Allah," seeking thereby the Face of Allah.'"
Ibn Shihab said: "Then I asked al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Ansari, one of the Banu Salim and one of their leaders, about the hadith of Mahmud, and he confirmed it."
