The Shaykh : His saying, the Exalted:
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. وهزي إليك بجذع النخلة تساقط عليك رطبا جنيا
[Maryam 19:25]
They said that the verb contains a meaning that is transitive with "ila" (to), meaning "shake and gather to yourself," so that the shaking comes from her side. And His saying:
will fall upon you تساقط عليك
means that with just the shaking, the fresh dates fall down, and yet they do not burst; they remain fresh dates, as if they were picked easily. The custom is that when fresh dates fall from the palm tree, they burst and tear apart, but this is among the signs of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. A woman in labor shakes the trunk of the palm tree, not its top, because shaking the top is easier, and yet the palm tree sways and the fresh dates fall in this manner, picked without changing or bursting on the ground. And this, as I said, is among the signs of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. The point of reference is His saying:
Fresh dates, ripe and ready رطبا جنيا
And the doctors have mentioned that one of the best things for a woman in labor, meaning a woman who has just given birth, is eating fresh dates. And this is the apparent meaning, because Allah made this palm tree easy for Maryam (may Allah be pleased with her).
