The reciter: Abu Ma'mar narrated to us, 'Abd al-Warith narrated to us, Ayyub ibn Abi Tamimah narrated to us from al-Qasim from Zahdm, who said:
We were with Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, and there was brotherhood between us and this tribe of Jurhum. Food was brought to us containing chicken meat, and there was a man sitting among the people, red-faced, who did not approach the food. He said, "Come closer, for I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) eating from it." He said, "I saw him eat something and I disliked it, so I swore that I would not eat it." He said, "Come closer, I will inform you or narrate to you: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a group of the Ash'ari tribe and found him angry while he was distributing livestock from the charity. We asked him to provide us with mounts, so he swore that he would not provide us with mounts. He said: 'I have nothing to provide you with mounts.' Then a group of camels was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, 'Where are the Ash'aris? Where are the Ash'aris?' He said, 'So he gave us five she-camels, white at the foreheads.' We stayed for a short time, and I said to my companions, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forgotten his oath. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) overlooks his oath, we will never succeed.' So we returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we asked you to provide us with mounts, and you swore that you would not provide us with them, so we thought you had forgotten your oath.' He said: 'Indeed, Allah is the one who provided you with mounts. By Allah, if Allah wills, I will not swear an oath and then see something better than it, except that I will do what is better and expiate for it.'"
كنا عند أبي موسى الأشعري وكان بيننا وبين هذا الحي من جرم إخاء فأتي بطعام فيه لحم دجاج وفي القوم رجل جالس أحمر فلم يدن من طعامه قال ادن فقد رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يأكل منه قال إني رأيته أكل شيئاً فقذرته فحلفت أن لا آكله فقال ادن أخبرك أو أحدثك إني أتيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في نفر من الأشعريين فوافقته وهو غضبان وهو يقسم نعماً من نعم الصدقة فاستحملناه فحلف أن لا يحملنا قال : ما عندي ما أحملكم عليه ثم أتي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بنهب من إبل فقال أين الأشعريون أين الأشعريون قال فأعطانا خمس ذود غر الذرى فلبثنا غير بعيد فقلت لأصحابي نسي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يمينه فوالله لئن تغفلنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يمينه لا نفلح أبداً فرجعنا إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقلنا يا رسول الله إنا استحملناك فحلفت أن لا تحملنا فظننا أنك نسيت يمينك فقال : إن الله هو حملكم إني والله إن شاء الله لا أحلف على يمين فأرى غيرها خيراً منها إلا أتيت الذي هو خير وتحللتها
