Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q3: What do you say about this hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who took an oath, but he found something else better than that, should do that which is better andمَن حلف على يمين فرأى غيرها خيرًا منها فليأت الذي هو خير ويكفّر عن يمينه
Sahih Muslim 1651b
Is this hadith authentic,
and does this hadith apply to the first and second questions? We ask you to explain this hadith, and may Allah reward you with good.

A3: This hadith is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih), al-Tirmidhi al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah in their Sunan, from the report of a group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), among them Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). This hadith does not apply to the first question, because it is not an oath, but rather a mere thought. It applies to the second question if the intention was to prohibit something, and then it became clear that it should not be prohibited; in that case, he must expiate for his oath.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
