Are Luqman and al-Khidr prophets or righteous men?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Are Luqman and al-Khidr prophets or righteous men?
The Shaykh : What do you think if I say: they are prophets, would you follow them? Answer.
The questioner : No.
The Shaykh : Okay, and if I say: they are not prophets, would it harm them in any way if they were prophets?
The questioner : No.
So what is the benefit of this research? What is the benefit? Luqman, Allah granted him wisdom, without doubt, as Allah the Exalted said:[Luqman 31:12] But did Allah explicitly state that he was a prophet? And did Allah mention any people for him? No. Al-Khidr is the same; Allah granted him knowledge that Musa did not know, to show Musa that his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "I do not know anyone on earth who is more knowledgeable than me," is a statement in which a person should know his own standing. So Allah prepared al-Khidr for him, and Allah the Mighty and Majestic taught al-Khidr what is to come, as Allah has related to us, and he is not a prophet.
So what appears is that Luqman is not a prophet, and that al-Khidr is not a prophet. Also, al-Khidr specifically died in his time and has not been found until now. Some poor people say: al-Khidr is present now, and they claim that he may attend scholarly gatherings. They also claim, some of them, just as the Rafidah claimed that Ali is the voice of the clouds and thunder, they claim the same. But praise be to Allah who guided us to what we differed in regarding the truth by His permission.
