Fatwa No. ( 6001 ):
Q: Many common Muslims in many Islamic countries, and the scholars of the Sufi paths, believe that al-Khidr , the companion of Musa (peace be upon him), is alive and well to this day, that he travels around the entire world, and that he takes on different forms. They believe that he has no shadow and that he is accompanied by the Prophet (Ilyas) (peace be upon him). The common people believe that if al-Khidr visits them and prays for them, they become wealthy in the blink of an eye. If he becomes angry with them, they become poor if they were wealthy, and sick if they were healthy. Among their beliefs, may Allah protect us from them, is that he comes in the form of a beggar one time and in the form of a patient from whom pus and blood flow another time. If they drive him out of their homes, this is a sign of their misery and wretchedness. If they welcome him and treat him, he disappears without leaving any trace, and this is a sign of their happiness.
Is al-Khidr , the companion of Musa (peace be upon him), alive and well to this day? Is he a prophet? Is there any explicit mention in the authentic Prophetic hadiths of what the reality of his matter is?
A: Al-Khidr is a prophet among the prophets of Allah (peace and blessings be upon them all). The correct view is that he has died, like other human beings. Therefore, he does not travel around the world, nor does he take on different forms, and he is not a cause of wealth or poverty today. We have previously issued a detailed fatwa about him with the evidence. The text of it is: (The correct of the scholars' statements is what the majority held, namely that al-Khidr (peace be upon him) has died; due to the apparent generality of the statement of the Exalted:[Al-Anbya 21:34] , and due to what is established from Ibn 'Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: . Narrated by Muslim, Then this is the prevailing principle in the Sunnah of Allah regarding the children of
Adam. It is necessary to adhere to this until evidence is established that is transmitted from him indicating an exception. And it has not been established - to our knowledge - anything indicating an exception for al-Khidr (peace be upon him). And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا لِبَشَرٍ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ الْخُلْدَThe Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the 'Isha' prayer one night near the end of his life. When he finished the prayer, he stood up and said: "Do you see this night of yours? In a hundred years from now, not one person who is on the face of the earth today will remain." Ibn 'Umar said: "The people were confused by the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the hundred years they were discussing in their hadiths. However, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Not one person who is on the face of the earth today will remain,' meaning by this that that century would come to an end."
