Exegesis of Surat al-Tur, verses (37 to the end of the surah), and other selected verses and their benefits.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We begin this session by speaking about what Allah the Mighty and Majestic has facilitated regarding the exegesis of the remainder of Surat al-Tur, where we had reached the words of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He:
Or have they the depositories [containing the provision] of your Lord? Or are they the controllers [of them]?
[At-Tur 52:37]
Here, "Am" means "Bal" (rather) with the hamza, meaning: Rather, do they possess the treasuries of Allah, meaning the treasuries of the provision of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so that they withhold from whom they will and give to whom they will?
And the answer is: No, they do not possess that, nor do they own anything of this. Rather, the One who owns provision, both giving and withholding, is Allah Blessed and Exalted is He. And when He denied that they possess the treasuries of Allah, He said:
Or are they the controllers [of them]?
[At-Tur 52:37]
Meaning: Rather, are they those who have control, dominance, power, and the final word? And the answer is: No. So if they have none of this, they become created beings and become humbled before the power of Allah the Mighty and Majestic.
Then He the Exalted said:
Or have they a stairway [into the heaven] upon which they listen
[At-Tur 52:38]
And "al-Salam" is the means of ascent and the staircase. The meaning is: Do they have a ladder by which they ascend to the sky to listen to what is said in the sky?
The answer is: No. If they claim that,
Then let their listener produce a clear authority.
[At-Tur 52:38]
That is: with a clear, manifest proof that they listened to what is said in the sky.
And the answer is: They will find no way to that.
Except for the soothsayers who have a vision from the jinn, who listens to what is said in the sky and then lies a hundred lies about what he heard, so that the one word he heard from the sky is believed.
Then He the Exalted said:
Or has He daughters while you have sons?
[At-Tur 52:39]
This is also in the sense of "Bal" (rather), and the interrogative is for rebuke and denial. Meaning: Would Allah have daughters and they have sons? Because they claimed that the soldiers of Allah the Exalted are daughters, and that they have sons. It is known that the one who has sons is dominant over the one who has daughters, because his soldiers are male, stronger, more resolute, and more courageous than women.
And they have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females
[Az-Zukhruf 43:19]
As Allah the Exalted said about them, He said:
Were they witnesses to their creation?
Meaning: They did not witness their creation so that they would say: They are daughters.
Their testimony will be recorded.
That is: their testimony, which is falsehood and a lie,
And they ask.
.
The important point is that these disbelievers in the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) from Quraysh said: They have sons and Allah has daughters. Allah the Exalted said:
And they attribute to Allah daughters - exalted is He - and for them is what they desire.
[An-Nahl 16:57]
And what they desire is males. So much so that one of them:
And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
[An-Nahl 16:58]
That is: filled with anger and sorrow,
He withdraws from the people.
hides from the people,
because of the ill of which he has been informed
[An-Nahl 16:59]
then he hesitates,
Will he keep it in humiliation?
That is: in humiliation and degradation,
or bury it in the ground
[An-Nahl 16:59]
he plunges it into it, and this is the buried alive girl,
Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.
[An-Nahl 16:59]
.
(39) Or has He daughters while you have sons? (40) Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
[At-Tur 52:39-40]
Meaning: Rather, do you ask them for a fee? The interrogative here is for negation. Every "Am" here has an interrogative for negation and rebuke. Meaning: Do you, O Muhammad, when you called them to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, do you say: Give me a heavy, large fee that they cannot afford so that they would reject you?
And the answer is: No. Allah the Exalted said:
Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not ask you for the Qur'an any payment, and I am not of the pretentious قُلْ مَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ
[Sad 38:86]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say to anyone: Give me a fee for my calling you. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) spends money to reconcile hearts, as he gave a great amount of wealth to those whose hearts were to be reconciled, and he does not ask anyone for any compensation for what he brought of the message.
Some scholars cited evidence that it is not permissible for a person to take a fee for teaching knowledge, meaning: hiring, saying to a person: I will not teach you except for such and such. But there is a consideration in this, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You are most entitled to take wages for doing a Ruqya with Allah's Book.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5737
.
He the Exalted said:
(40) Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down? (41) Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
[At-Tur 52:40-41]
What is hidden from people and they preserve it?
And the answer is: No, they do not have knowledge of the unseen. Rather, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) himself does not know anything of the unseen. A thing would be in his house and he would not know it. So much so that he entered one day and the pot was boiling on the fire with meat, and he did not know what it was. And even Abu Hurayrah was with him, so he shrank back from him and did not know for what reason he had gone.
So the result is: The Messenger himself does not know the unseen, so those below him are even more so. And Allah the Exalted commanded him to declare that he does not know the unseen, so He the Exalted said:
I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel
[Al-An'am 6:50]
And here He says to these disbelievers:
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
[At-Tur 52:41]
? And the answer is: No.
Then He said:
Or do they intend a plan
[At-Tur 52:42]
Meaning: Do these people intend to plot against you, O Muhammad, by invalidating your call and destroying and killing you?
And the answer is: Yes, but their plotting is nothing compared to the plotting of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. Allah the Exalted said:
But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
[Al-Anfal 8:30]
And they plotted against him the greatest plot. For they gathered to discuss what to do with Muhammad, when they saw his call spreading and that they had no power to repel it. They gathered to consult and mentioned three opinions: imprisonment, killing, and expulsion.
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you
[Al-Anfal 8:30]
That is: they would imprison you.
or kill you or evict you
[Al-Anfal 8:30]
Allah the Exalted said:
But they plan, and Allah plans
[Al-Anfal 8:30]
Their opinion settled on killing, but who could kill him, because Banu Hashim would demand retribution. They said: Ten young men from different Arab tribes should gather, and each of them should be given a sharp sword, and they should strike Muhammad with the blow of one man, so that his blood is dispersed among the tribes, and Banu Hashim would be unable to demand retribution. They did that, but they plotted and Allah plotted, and Allah is the best of plotters. Allah saved him from them. Then He permitted him to migrate, so he migrated to Medina.
Or do they intend a plan? But those who disbelieve - they are the object of a plan.
[At-Tur 52:42]
The sentence here is a nominal sentence, both of whose ends are definite, separated by a pronoun of separation, which indicates emphasis and restriction. Meaning: So the plotting, the plotting, the plotting is for whom? For those who disbelieved.
And here a question is asked:
Or do they intend a plan? But those who disbelieve - they are the object of a plan.
[At-Tur 52:42]
What is this style called by the scholars of rhetoric? Who knows?
Or do they intend a plan? But those who disbelieve - they are the object of a plan.
[At-Tur 52:42]
What is it called by the scholars of rhetoric? Subhan Allah.
The student: Explicit mention in place of implicit mention.

The Shaykh : Yes, it is called explicit mention in place of implicit mention. Explicit mention in place of implicit mention means: Instead of saying: "So they are the plotted against," Allah the Exalted said:
So those who disbelieved
And this has a benefit, or more than that. If He said: "So those who disbelieved," it means: These are disbelievers. If He said:
Those who disbelieved
It means: Whoever is a disbeliever is the plotted against, even if it is not these people. These are two semantic benefits.
The third benefit: Alerting the addressee, because if the speech is on one pattern, a person might become accustomed to it and be negligent. But if something comes that takes the speech out of the pattern, he pays attention.
Then He the Exalted said:
Or have they a deity other than Allah? Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
[At-Tur 52:43]
That is: Rather, do they have a god other than Allah?
And the answer is: In reality, no. By claim, yes. They have gods other than Allah whom they worship, such as al-Lat, 'Uzza, Manat, Hubal, and other idols known among the Arabs. For this reason He said:
Or have they a deity other than Allah? Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
[At-Tur 52:43]
So Allah the Exalted purified Himself from what these people associate with Him, to make clear that these idols are false, and that Allah is purified from every partner.
Or do they have a god other than Allah?
? The answer is: In reality, no. In falsehood, yes. They worship other than Allah and say: They are gods. And they say to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
Have He made the gods one god? Indeed, that is a great thing
For this reason He said:
Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
[At-Tur 52:43]

And if they were to see a fragment from the sky falling, they would say, "[It is merely] clouds heaped up."
[At-Tur 52:44]
Meaning: If the punishment descended upon them. And "al-Kusuf" is the punishment, as they said: So it rained,
upon us fragments of the sky
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:187]

The student: ...

The Shaykh : ... "Al-Kusuf" means: the cutting off of the punishment.
And if they were to see a fragment from the sky falling, they would say, "[It is merely] clouds heaped up."
[At-Tur 52:44]
And this indicates that they see themselves as being on the truth and that they are not deserving of punishment, and that this descending "kusuf" cuts off the punishment. It is nothing but accumulated clouds. And this is like what 'Ad said when they saw the winds coming towards them:
They said, "This is a cloud that will give us rain"
Because these disbelievers, and may Allah protect us from them, are stubborn and see themselves as being on the truth, and that they are not deserving of punishment. So when they see the punishment, they say: This is something ordinary, and we will not fear it and we will not be afraid of it.
Allah the Exalted said:
So leave them فَذَرْهُمْ
Leave them,
To wade deep and to play
to engage in their words, to play with their actions, to be distracted in this world, and to see themselves as being on the truth,
until they meet their Day in which they will be struck insensible - حَتَّى يُلاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي فِيهِ يُصْعَقُونَ
[At-Tur 52:45]
And that is the day of their death. Meaning: Leave these people, for their end is death, even if they flee. And when they meet the day they are promised, they will know that they are on falsehood, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is on the truth.
The Day their plan will not avail them at all, nor will they be helped.
[At-Tur 52:46]
So when death comes to them, their plotting will not benefit them at all, because they are in the grip of Allah, and their period of being given a chance to repent has ended, and nothing remains for them but punishment.
And indeed, for those who have wronged is a punishment before that, but most of them do not know.
[At-Tur 52:47]
if those who did wrong
[Az-Zumar 39:47]
And the intended meaning is the disbelievers. Allah the Exalted said:
And the disbelievers - they are the wrongdoers.
[Al-Baqarah 2:254]

And indeed, for those who have wronged is a punishment before that
[At-Tur 52:47]
Meaning: Before the punishment of death, which is what they suffered from drought, famine, fear, wars, and other things that occurred before death.
but most of them do not know." وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لا يَعْلَمُونَ
[Al-An'am 6:37]
But most of them are heedless of this, and they do not think that it is anything of the punishment. And what is after that?
And be patient, [O Muhammad], for the decision of your Lord
[At-Tur 52:48]
Be patient, O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And patience is restraining the self from what should not be done. And His saying:
For the judgment of your Lord.
includes both the cosmic ruling and the legislative ruling. That is, be patient with what your Lord has decreed as obligatory, which is conveying the message, even if you are afflicted with what befalls you. Be patient with your Lord’s cosmic and decreed ruling, which is what Allah the Exalted decrees upon you from these foolish people, such as their mockery, aggression, and oppression. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted just as his brothers among the messengers were afflicted with great affliction. The placenta of a camel was placed on his back while he was prostrating under the Ka'bah, in a place of safety. He was pelted with stones when he went to the people of Ta'if until they bled his heels (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him). He did not regain consciousness until he was in the land of Thaqif, where they threw filth and stench at the threshold of his door (peace and blessings be upon him). And he said: “O neighbor, who is this?” This is in compliance with the command of Allah, where Allah said to him:
And be patient, [O Muhammad], for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes.
[At-Tur 52:48]
meaning: We see you with Our eyes, we watch you, we observe you, and we care for you. This is like what a person says to one he fears for and loves: “You are in my eye.” It is known that this expression does not mean that the addressee is physically inside the eye, but rather that he is under my sight, my watch, and my protection.
And in this verse is the affirmation of the eye for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and it is a reality, but it does not resemble the eyes of creation in any way, due to His saying the Exalted:
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]

And exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord when you arise. (49) And in a part of the night exalt Him and after [the setting of] the stars.
[At-Tur 52:48-49]
exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lordسبح بحمد ربك
[Al-Hijr 15:98]
meaning: Say: Glory be to Allah and His praise. When do you stand up? When you stand up from any gathering, or when you stand up from your sleep. The important point is that it is general. For this reason, the expiation for a gathering is for a person to say:
Glory be to Thee. O Allah, and I begin with praise of Thee, I testify that there is no god but Thou; I ask Thy pardon, and return to Thee in repentance.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4859Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
A person should conclude his gathering with this whenever he stands up from it:
Glory be to Thee. O Allah, and I begin with praise of Thee, I testify that there is no god but Thou; I ask Thy pardon, and return to Thee in repentance.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4859Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
And [in part] of the night exalt Him
[Qaf 50:40]
meaning: And glorify also, and glorify your Lord from the night. Not the whole night, but “from” here indicates a part. For this reason, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard about some of his companions, one of them said:
I will stand [in prayer] and not sleep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As for me, I stand [in prayer] and I sleep. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me.
Therefore, it is disliked for a person to stand in prayer for the entire night, even if he has strength and energy, except in the last ten nights of Ramadan. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to keep the entire night awake in prayer.
And in a part of the night exalt Him and after [the setting of] the stars.
[At-Tur 52:49]
meaning: the time of their setting. Is the intended meaning the setting of their light due to the spread of the sun’s light, or the setting of their bodies at sunset?
Answer: Both. And the intended meaning is the Fajr prayer, because the Fajr prayer is when the stars set. The Fajr prayer and the 'Asr prayer are the best of the five prayers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
You will see your Lord as you see the full moon on a clear night. So if you can, do not be overcome by missing a prayer before the rising of the sun and a prayer before its setting.
And the intended meaning of the prayer before the sun rises is what? The Fajr prayer. And before it sets, the 'Asr prayer.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
He who observed two prayers at two cool (hours) would enter Paradise.
Sahih Muslim 635a
And the two cool times are the Fajr prayer and the 'Asr prayer. So the Fajr prayer is the cool time of the night, and the 'Asr prayer is the cool time of the day.
And in a part of the night exalt Him and after [the setting of] the stars.
[At-Tur 52:49]
And with this, the discussion ends with what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has made easy regarding Surat al-Tur.
We ask Allah the Exalted to benefit us and you with what He has taught us, and to guide us to His straight path, and not to let our hearts deviate after He has guided us, and to bestow upon us from Him mercy. Indeed, He is the Bestower.
And with the end of this surah, this meeting ends until the study begins, if Allah wills. But now, it is the time for questions.
Ask, my brother.
No, no, do not say what its color is.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Which country?
