A man has two wives, and a person was breastfed by one of them; does the other become his mother through breastfeeding?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Your Eminence, there is a man who has two wives, and a child was breastfed by one of them; does the other...

The Shaykh : By one of them, or by one of the two?

The questioner : Yes, Shaykh?

The Shaykh : By one of them, or by one of the two? Yes?

The questioner : Allah knows best. I think it is "by one of the two."

The Shaykh : You do not know grammar. If you say "by one of them," it means they are men.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And if you say "by one of the two," it means women, and it is not possible to be breastfed by "one of them"! All right.

The questioner : By one of the two.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : So, does the other become his mother through breastfeeding or not?

The Shaykh : No, the other is not his mother through breastfeeding.

The questioner : So, she has no relationship with him?

The Shaykh : She has a relationship, according to the opinion of the majority of scholars, as his father's wife through breastfeeding. A father's wife through breastfeeding is like a father's wife by blood. The Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) holds a different view. He says: "Breastfeeding does not affect affinity (musha'arah) because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful. يحرم من الرّضاع ما يحرم من النّسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
And the father's wife is forbidden to the son on the side of affinity"
. Do you understand now?

The questioner : Yes, indeed.

The Shaykh : So, the second wife is a matter of scholarly disagreement regarding the breastfed child. Yes.
