What is the ruling on the tajwid of the verses of the Qur'an?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Please, go ahead!

The questioner : You mentioned in your explanation of the verses that they encourage reflecting upon the Qur'an and memorizing it. Is it obligatory for us to memorize the Qur'an with the rules of tajwid?

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed.

The questioner : And the second part of the question, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : No, let us take the first question and then look at the second question:
The issue of tajwid is not obligatory. Whoever reflects on the condition of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and those who came after them knows that it is not obligatory. If we said it was obligatory, we would be sinning against many people today, including the imams of the mosques and the shaykhs as well. Great scholar shaykhs, if you asked them about the rules of tajwid, they would not know them. The important thing is that you read the Qur'an without a lahn (mispronunciation) that changes the meaning, and that you do not merge letters that cannot be merged, and that you establish the letters and vowel movements as much as possible. As for tajwid, it is divided into two categories:
One category is exaggerated and forced, and this is closer to being prohibited than to being permissible.
The other category is natural, and this is praiseworthy and recommended, and it is an adornment of the voice with the Qur'an. But we do not say that it is obligatory. Did you understand?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Very well.
