What is the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Indeed, you do not guide whom you love”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Your Eminence, the Shaykh, what is the meaning of the verse:
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
?
And His saying:
whom He wills من يشاء
, does it refer to Allah the Exalted or to the servant?

The Shaykh : Huh?

The questioner :
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : What is its interpretation?

The Shaykh : Its interpretation is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was eager for the guidance of creation. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) loved to guide all of creation, but this is not within his power. He has only one thing upon him, which is conveying the message and calling to it. As for guiding creation, nothing is required of him in that regard. As He said in other verses:
Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills.
[Al-Baqarah 2:272]
, this is similar to it:
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
.
And guidance here means success (tawfiq), not indication (dalalah), because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates the path to creation, as Allah the Exalted said:
And indeed, [O Muhammad], you guide to a straight path -
[Ash-Shuraa 42:52]
, but it is not in his hand to make a person guided. Therefore, he strove with utmost effort until Allah the Exalted would conclude his uncle Abu Talib with the word of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), but he was not able to do so. We all know what Abu Talib had in terms of favors and support for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), protecting him and defending him, known by his word and his deed. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was eager for him to be guided. He came to him while he was in the throes of death and said to him:
O my uncle
Look at this gentle phrase,
O my uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, an expression I will defend your case with, before Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3884
, and a bad companion is all bad, so the Messenger would say:
Say: There is no god but Allah, and they were saying to him: Do you turn away from the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib
, what is the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib?
Al-Lat is a god, and al-'Uzza is a god, and Manat is a god. Do you turn away from the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib? The last thing he said, may Allah protect us, was that he was on the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib. O Allah, make our ending good, O Lord. O Allah, make our ending good. O Allah, make our ending good.
till Abu Talib said as his last statement that he was on the religion of `Abdul Muttalib and refused to say, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 1360
, do you know what happened?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was undoubtedly among the most loyal people in repaying good. He rewarded his uncle and interceded for him with Allah, so he was in a shallow pool of fire, and he had two sandals of fire on his feet from which his brain boiled, may Allah protect us. They were on his feet, and his brain is at the top of his body, boiling from them. So what about his belly and his chest? It is more severe and more severe, because it is closer to the fire. We ask Allah for safety. So he was in a shallow pool of fire from which his brain boiled forever.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
had It not been for me, he would have been in the bottom of the (Hell) Fire.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3883
.
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was distressed and said:
I will keep on asking for Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2035Sahih (Darussalam)
, meaning he was distressed by the action of Abu Talib and his refusal, not by the decree of Allah. The decree of Allah is something he is pleased with, without doubt. When he said:
I will keep on asking for Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2035Sahih (Darussalam)
, listen to what was revealed. Allah the Exalted revealed:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
, then Allah answered another matter, responding to the seeking of forgiveness by a Messenger from among the resolute messengers for his father. Allah answered regarding it and said:
And the request of forgiveness of Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him
[At-Tawbah 9:114]
, what is it?

The questioner :
He disavowed him.
.

The Shaykh :
he disassociated himself from him. Indeed was Abraham compassionate and patient.
[At-Tawbah 9:114]
, and for this reason, it is not permissible for us, if we know that one of our relatives or in-laws died while not praying, to seek forgiveness from Allah for him. If we did this, we would deviate from the path of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who believed, because Allah says:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
, so if you know that your father or your brother or your sons died while praying, do not seek forgiveness for him. Do you want to oppose Allah?
To contradict Allah in His decree?
Indeed, Allah has decreed that the disbelievers are in the Fire, and no one ever seeks forgiveness for any of the polytheists. It is clear now.
So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is able to guide creation to the truth in the sense that he indicates it to them, but he is not able to make them guided. The matter is in the hand of the One who is above the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and above everyone, and that is Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
Subhan Allah, meaning the wonders of creation. Ibrahim, his father, was a disbeliever or a Muslim?

The questioner : A disbeliever.

The Shaykh : A disbeliever. Noah, his son?

The questioner : A disbeliever.

The Shaykh : A disbeliever. Subhan Allah! A disbeliever came out of a Messenger from among the resolute messengers! And a Messenger came out of a disbeliever, and he is from among the resolute messengers.

The questioner : Allah is the Greatest.

The Shaykh : So that you may know thereby the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and that He is Able to do all things. O Allah, guide us among those You have guided.

The questioner : Amen.
