Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And Allah the Exalted revealed:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives ما كان للنبي والذين آمنوا أن يستغفروا للمشركين ولو كانوا أولي قربى
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
.
was not ما كان
"Ma" is a negation, "kana" is a defective past tense verb, and its subject is
to seek forgiveness أن يستغفروا
"an" and what it entered upon, in the sense of a verbal noun, which is the deferred subject of "kana"
for the Prophet للنبي
, and the predicate is advanced. It means that his seeking forgiveness was not possible and could not be. Know that when "ma kana" or "ma yajib" appears, what is intended by it? What is intended by it is that it is impossible to the utmost degree of impossibility, impossible by the Shari'ah to the utmost degree of impossibility. ... When "ma kana" or "la yajib" or "ma yajib" or something similar appears in the Qur'an, the meaning is that it is impossible to the utmost degree of impossibility
It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He ما كان لله أن يتخذ من ولد سبحانه
[Maryam 19:35]
was not ما كان
impossible to the utmost degree of impossibility.
And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son. وما ينبغي للرحمان أن يتخذ ولدا
[Maryam 19:92]
Impossible
It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon لا الشمس ينبغي لها أن تدرك القمر
[Ya-Sin 36:40]
Yes, and so
Verily Allah does not sleep and it does not befit Him to sleep إن الله لا ينام ولا ينبغي له أن ينام
Sahih Muslim 179c
. Yes.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : What is it?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Except that they said this is more established, meaning good.
And His saying:
to ask forgiveness for the polytheists أن يستغفروا للمشركين
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
that they seek forgiveness for the polytheists.
even if they were relatives ولو كانوا أولي قربى
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
For this reason, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the 'Umrah and passed by his mother's grave, he asked Allah for permission to seek forgiveness for her. He said:
O my Lord, grant me permission to seek forgiveness for my mother يا رب أئذن لي أن أستغفر لأمي
So Allah prevented him from granting him permission. Then he asked for permission to visit her grave, and He granted him permission. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited his mother's grave, and she was a polytheist, for the sake of taking a lesson. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, and the Companions around him wept. But Allah the Exalted prevented him from seeking forgiveness because these are polytheists, not worthy of forgiveness. If you call upon Allah to do what is not befitting Him, it is an overstepping in supplication.
And Allah revealed regarding Abu Talib:
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. إنك لا تهدي من أحببت ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء وهو أعلم بالمهتدين
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
.
regarding Abu Talib في أبي طالب
Meaning regarding his case, otherwise the address is not to Abu Talib. To whom is the address? To the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes,
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills وإنك لا تهدي من أحببت ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
and also He guides whom He wills. We have previously stated that every action Allah attributes to His will is accompanied by His wisdom. If His wisdom dictates that He guides him, I ask Allah to make me and you among them. And if His wisdom dictates that He misguides him, Allah misguides him. This hadith, in reality, cuts off the means of the polytheists who associate partners with the Messenger and others. Those who ask the Messenger now, seek his aid, seek his forgiveness, and ask him for forgiveness - these are polytheists. Does that benefit them or not? It does not benefit them. It never benefits them, because if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not permitted to seek forgiveness for his uncle Abu Talib, even though he stood with him in a great manner and did a beautiful deed, and yet he was not permitted to seek forgiveness for him, how then for others who associate partners with Allah? The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) never benefits them.
