What is the ruling on supplication and raising the hands after the prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh: You mentioned regarding the issue of supplication or raising the hands when making du'a that the state of the Salaf, the Companions, and the people of knowledge in this matter was that they used to make du'a before the taslim. The issue of raising the hands, I mean after the prayer, is it the same for the obligatory and voluntary prayers? Is it better for a person to raise his hands?

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you. In the first place, what is raising the hands? Do not ask about raising the hands after the prayer; ask about supplication after the prayer: is it prescribed or not? We say: It is not prescribed, because Allah said:
Then when you have completed the prayer فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ الصَّلاةَ
Complete it?

The questioner :
Remember Allah فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ
.

The Shaykh :
Remember Allah فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ
He did not say: "So make du'a." Therefore, there is no place for du'a after the prayer; the place for du'a is before the taslim. Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach his Companions the tashahhud and say: "Then make du'a for whatever you wish." So he placed the du'a before the taslim. And he instructed Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to say after the final tashahhud, before the taslim:
O Allah, help me in remembering You, in giving You thanks, and worshipping You well. اللهم أعني على ذكرك وشكرك وحسن عبادتك
Sunan Abi Dawud 1522Sahih (Al-Albani)
And this is du'a. Furthermore, the meaning necessitates this. As long as a person is praying, he is conversing with Allah. And when he turns away from the prayer, the conversation ends. So which is better: to make du'a while you are conversing with Allah, or after you have turned away from the conversation? The former is better, and there is no difference between the obligatory and voluntary prayers.

The questioner : The hadith regarding supplication between the adhan and the iqamah, does it not exist?

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : The hadith regarding supplication between the adhan and the iqamah, does it not exist?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is authentic. You may make du'a after the sunnah prayer that comes before the iqamah. Not because it is after the sunnah, but because it is a time of response. There is no harm in this, and raise your hand until the iqamah is called.

The questioner : What if a person makes du'a before the taslim and then continues making du'a for a long time?

The Shaykh : There is no harm. It falls under the hadith. After that, from the left.
