Does one who dies as a result of smoking count as a suicide?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you: Does one who dies as a result of smoking count as a suicide?

The Shaykh : Do you think that the one who smokes does so in order to die? Answer me, just say: No, or yes.

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : All right, so he is not a suicide. But the one who puts explosives in his belly and goes to the enemy and detonates them there, is he a suicide or not? He is a suicide. There is a difference between one who intends to kill himself and one who does not. However, it is said: If the harm of smoking leads to death, this is among the strongest evidence for the ruling of prohibition. And there is no doubt in my mind that smoking is forbidden because of the physical harms, genetic harms, and financial harms it contains. Have you not known that the one who smokes, if he cannot afford it, may sell his honor? Tell me: Yes, or no?

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : You say well: Yes. If he says to you: Is it not so? Say: Yes. Well, in any case, smoking is not in doubt for us that it is forbidden, but we do not say that the one who smokes killed himself, because he did not intend to kill himself. Yes, that is right.
