When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed a verse of promise, he would ask Allah, so when mentioning the verse that includes the people of the right and the forerunners, which one does he ask for?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed a verse of promise, he would ask Allah the Exalted, or if it was a verse of warning, he would seek refuge. So regarding these verses mentioned at the beginning of the lesson, where Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) mentioned the forerunners and the people of the right, is it from the Sunnah to ask for both, or is it limited to one?

The Shaykh : He asks for the higher one.

The questioner : As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said.

The Shaykh : He asks for the higher one.

The questioner : And he remains silent at the [lower one].

The Shaykh : Do you mean in the prayer, or outside the prayer?

The questioner : No, in the prayer and in other things.

The Shaykh : It is not reported from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that he did this except while in the night prayer.

The questioner : Only.

The Shaykh : This is how it was reported from him, and for this reason we say: It is recommended in the night prayer that when a person passes a verse of warning, he seeks refuge, and when he passes a verse of mercy, he asks, and when he passes a verse of glorification, he glorifies. In other prayers, we do not say it is recommended, but if he does it, there is no harm. In the obligatory prayer, we do not say "do it," because those who described the obligatory prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not mention that he did this. Therefore, a person should refrain from saying this in the obligatory prayer, and we hope there is no harm in it, if Allah wills, but we do not encourage him to say it.

The questioner : And outside the prayer?

The Shaykh : What was reported in the prayer is what was reported, but there is no harm, there is no prohibition.

The questioner : And he asks in the first [unit] and does not ask in the second?

The Shaykh : He asks for the higher one, there is no doubt. Which one is more beloved to us: that we be among the forerunners or among the people of the right?

The questioner : Among the forerunners, without a doubt.

The Shaykh : But we have a bad opinion of ourselves, so say: "Perhaps we will be among the people of the right, perhaps we will be saved from the punishment." Yes, the right.
