The questioner : He says that he is a young man who is diligent in performing the night prayer and the witr, and he praises Allah, but I pray it before I sleep for fear that I will not wake up, meaning around 12:30. Is this the middle of the night, even though I would like to pray in the last part of the night but I are unable to?

The Shaykh : If you are afraid that you will not get up in the last part of the night, then the Sunnah for you is to pray the witr at the beginning of the night before you sleep, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Abu Hurayrah, Abu Dharr, and Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with them) to pray the witr before they sleep, and he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever fears that he will not get up in the last part of the night, let him pray the witr at the beginning of it. And whoever hopes to get up in the last part of the night, let him pray the witr at the end of it, for the prayer in the last part of the night is witnessed, and that is better. من خاف ألا يقوم من آخر الليل فليوتر أوله ، ومن طمع أن يقوم من آخر الليل فليوتر آخره فإن صلاة آخر الليل مشهودة وذلك أفضل
So now, if you know from yourself that you will not wake up, then pray the witr before you sleep. And if you know that you will wake up, or if it is more likely that you will wake up, then delay the witr to the last part of the night, because the prayer in the last part of the night is witnessed, and that is better.
If it happens that you delay it to the last part of the night but you do not get up, then pray the witr as an even number from the daytime. That is, if it is your custom to pray the witr with three rak'ahs, pray four. And if it is your custom to pray the witr with five, pray six, and so on.
As for your saying: "You pray at 12:00, is this the middle of the night?"
We say: The middle of the night is the midpoint between the setting of the sun and the appearance of the dawn. So look at the time between the setting of the sun and the appearance of the dawn, then divide it in half; that is the middle of the night. This varies depending on summer and winter.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
