The Shaykh : This shawl is a square cloak with patterns. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at its patterns once, and when he finished the prayer, he ordered that it be given to Abu Jahm and that his Anbajani shawl be brought. The scholars said that Abu Jahm had gifted it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it to him because it had distracted him. However, so that his heart would not be broken, he asked for his Anbajani shawl so that he would not say, "Why did he return my gift?" This is part of the good character of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), where he averted harm from two angles: the harm of being distracted by this Anbajani shawl, which he averted by returning it to its owner, and the second is the harm of breaking or hurting this man's heart, so he asked for his Anbajani shawl to be brought.
The scholars said: The Anbajani is a thick cloak, meaning it is not one of the fine, soft cloths, and therefore it does not cause distraction.
In this is evidence that a person should avoid whatever distracts him in his prayer, even if he does not play with it except once. For example, if there are patterns in front of him or in his prayer place that occupy his mind, let him avoid them. Likewise, lights, likewise, sounds. Everything that distracts a person from his prayer, it is prescribed that he avoid it and stay away from it so that he does not become preoccupied with it instead of the prayer.
If someone asks: Is closing the eyes included in this? We say yes, if there is a reason for it, such as there being lights around him that tire him or sights that occupy him. But without a reason, no, even if he feels that it makes him more devout, he should not do it, because this may be from Shaytan, who beautifies this action for him, so he thinks that if he closes his eyes, he will be more devout. Yes. Yes?
