The reader: Chapter: The intention and consistency in deeds. 'Abdan narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us from Shu'bah from Ash'ath, who said: I heard my father say: I heard Masruq say: I asked 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): Which deed was most beloved to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: "The consistent one". He said: I said: At what time would he stand?

The Shaykh : In our copy, "at what time"; in another version, it says "at what time."
The reader: In our copy, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Very well.
The reader: Are they all authentic?

The Shaykh : They are all correct
The reader: She said: "He would stand when he heard the crower".

The Shaykh : The crower means the rooster, and most roosters have a precise timing. When the last third of the night approaches, they begin to crow, in winter and summer, glory be to Allah. In the past, when clocks were few and rare, people relied on them instead of clocks, and they had a precise timing. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand [for prayer] when he heard the crower, meaning the rooster, because there were no clocks at that time.
