The questioner : One night I missed the witr because I did not wake up until after the adhan, and I forgot and prayed Fajr, then I remembered the witr and prayed one rak'ah after the Fajr prayer. Is my action valid?

The Shaykh : The action that has passed and ended, we hope it is valid. But in the future, if a person sleeps through the witr or forgets it, he makes it up during the day, except that he does not make it up as witr but as an even number. So if his custom is to pray witr with three, he prays four; if his custom is to pray witr with five, he prays six; if his custom is to pray witr with seven, he prays eight; if his custom is to pray witr with nine, he prays ten; and if his custom is to pray witr with eleven, he prays twelve rak'ahs. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when sleep or pain overcame him كان النبي صلى اله عليه وعلى آله وسلم إذا غلبه نوم أو وجع
meaning he did not pray at night
he would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day صلى من النهار ثنتي عشرة ركعة
