The reader: "Chapter: The inheritance of the son of a son when there is no son". And Zayd said: "The children of the sons are in the position of the children, if there is no male child below them, their males are like their males, and their females are like their females, they inherit as they inherit, and they are excluded as they are excluded, and the child of a son does not inherit with the son".

The Shaykh : Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The children of the sons are in the position of the children", meaning in the position of the sons; the children of the sons are in the position of the sons, and the children of the daughters have nothing, because the children of the daughters are among the close relatives.
He says: "If there is no child below them"; if there is a child below them, meaning above them, if it is a male, they do not inherit anything, and if it is a female, she takes her fixed share and the rest is for the sons of the son and daughters of the son as residuary heirs, and if there are two females or more, they take their fixed share of two-thirds and the rest is for the sons of the son and daughters of the son as residuary heirs, the male receiving the share of two females.
And his saying: "Their males are like their males and their females are like their females" means with equality; so if a man dies leaving a son and a daughter, the son gets the share of two females, and likewise if a man dies leaving a son of a son and a daughter of a son, the son gets the share of two females.
He said: "And the child of a son does not inherit with the son". Why?
Because every male among the descendants excludes those below him; this is the rule. So the son excludes all the sons of the son, and the son of the son excludes those below him among the sons of the son, and so on.
And his saying: "The children of the sons are in the position of the children" is what Ibn 'Abbas used as evidence against Zayd, for Zayd holds that the grandfather is not like the father and holds that the son of a son is like the son, so Ibn 'Abbas said to him: "Does Zayd not fear Allah, making the son of a son in the position of the son and not making the father of the father in the position of the father?"
