The questioner : A person said in a gathering: "In the name of Allah, O my master, O Messenger of Allah." One of the brothers said to him: "This is shirk (associating partners with Allah)." Is this correct, and what is obligatory upon the one who said it, and what do you advise, may you be rewarded?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment:
Addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is not permissible except in what the Sunnah has brought. The Sunnah has brought the saying to the Muslim: "Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."
As for the one who says, "O my master, O Messenger of Allah," the least that can be said about it is that it is bid'ah (religious innovation). If he called out to him in this manner to seek aid from him or to seek his help in a matter, then it is shirk (associating partners with Allah).
So the issue requires detail: If he says, "O my master, O Messenger of Allah," and he intends to seek aid from him or to seek his help, then this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) and calling upon other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
And if he says, "O my master, O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you," then this is bid'ah (religious innovation) that did not come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). In any case, the one who says such a statement should repent to Allah and not return to it.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
