Exegesis of Surat al-Inshiqaq from His saying: "But those who disbelieved deny the truth" to the end of the surah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the first session of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, 1414 AH, and it is the session that takes place every Thursday of every week. We ask our brothers to excuse us for suspending these sessions until the study begins, if Allah wills.
In this session, we will speak about the end of Surat al-Inshiqaq, which is His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He:
(22) But those who have disbelieved deny, (23) And Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves. (24) So give them tidings of a painful punishment, (25) Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:22-25]
:
When He, Glorified and Exalted is He, mentioned that when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate, He, Glorified and Exalted is He, clarified that the reason for their leaving off prostration is their denial of what the messengers, peace and blessings be upon them, brought. This is because anyone whose faith is sincere must necessarily obey the command and avoid the prohibition, for sincere faith compels its owner to do so. You will not find a person who violates the forbidden or leaves off the obligatory except due to the weakness of his faith. For this reason, faith, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, is the affirmation that necessitates acceptance and submission. So whenever you see a man leaving off the obligatory or some of it, or committing the forbidden, know that his faith is weak, for if his faith were strong, he would not neglect the obligatory nor violate the prohibited. For this reason, He said here:
But those who have disbelieved deny,
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:22]
meaning: In their leaving off prostration, that was due to their denial of what the messengers, peace and blessings be upon them, brought.
And Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:23]
You know that the disbelievers are enemies of the messengers from the time Allah sent the messengers, peace and blessings be upon them, and that they gather against them and plot against them. So Allah the Exalted threatens them in this verse:
And Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:23]
meaning: with what they gather of words and deeds, grudges, enmities, and wealth against the messengers, peace and blessings be upon them.
Then He, the Exalted, said:
give them tidings of a painful punishment.
[Ali 'Imran 3:21]
: He informed them of the painful punishment that must occur. The address in His saying:
So give them the glad tidings.
is general for the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and for everyone to whom the address is valid. Whoever the address is valid for is included in this, and we must announce to every disbeliever the painful punishment. So we announce to every disbeliever the painful punishment that awaits him, as He, the Exalted, said:
and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.
[As-Sajdah 32:30]
.
Then He said:
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:25]
: "Except" here means "but." It is not valid to be a connected exception, for those who believed are not of the deniers in any way; rather, they are believers who affirm the truth. This is the disconnected exception, meaning: if the excepted is not of the same kind as the thing from which it is excepted, it is a disconnected exception, and "except" is estimated as "but," meaning: but those who believed and did righteous deeds have a reward that is not diminished.
Those who believed with their hearts, and their faith necessitated their standing in righteous deeds, these are the ones who have no punishment and do not await punishment
for them is a reward uninterrupted.
[Fussilat 41:8]
.
If it is asked: What is the righteous deed?
The answer is: The righteous deed is what combines two things:
The first: Sincerity to Allah the Exalted, such that the one who drives to the deed is sincerity to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, seeking His pleasure, seeking His reward, seeking safety from the Fire, and the person does not want anything of this world with his deed. For this reason, the scholars said: Deeds that are only worship do not become valid to take a wage for, such as the adhan, for example, it is not valid to call the adhan for a wage, and leading the prayer is not valid to lead for a wage, and reciting the Qur'an is not valid to recite for a wage. Unlike teaching the Qur'an, which is valid for a wage, because it is transitive, and the wage is for the work, not for the recitation. But I mean by recitation, the recitation of the Qur'an. If a person comes and says: I want to recite the Qur'an for a wage, then that is not valid and not permissible, for one of the conditions of the righteous deed is that it be sincere to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And whoever recites for a wage or worships for a wage has not made the deed sincere to Allah, so his deed is not accepted.
As for the second thing: It is that one follows the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in it, meaning: that the person follows the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in his deed, doing what he did and leaving what he left. So what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, left off while its cause existed is left off, and what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did while its cause existed, the Sunnah is to do it. Meaning: if the cause of the thing existed in the time of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and he did not do it, then the Sunnah is to leave it off.
For this reason, we say: What many of the Muslims today, or most of the Muslims today, do of celebrating the birth of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, on the twelfth day of this month, is a religious innovation that has no basis in the Sunnah. For the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, did not celebrate his birthday, nor did his Rightly Guided Caliphs, although we know with certainty that if it had been prescribed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would not have left it off without explanation to the Ummah, for he is responsible for conveying the message. So when he did not tell the Ummah that it is prescribed to celebrate this occasion, and when he did not do it himself, and his Rightly Guided Caliphs did not do it, it became known that it is a religious innovation, and that it does not increase its doer in anything from Allah except distance. We ask Allah for safety.
And this religious innovation first occurred in the fourth century, meaning after more than three hundred years had passed for the Muslim Ummah, this religious innovation occurred. They claimed that they honor the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in it.
And the truth is that every religious innovation does not contain honoring the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, for honoring the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is only in following his Sunnah, as Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger but fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
[Al-Hujurat 49:1]
, and let us look at this religious innovation: does it have a basis in history?
Does it have a basis in the Shari'ah?
We say: It has no basis in history, and that is because the birth of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, is disputed in more than five opinions, after agreeing that it was in Rabi', but they differ in the first day, the second day, the ninth, the tenth, and the twelfth; there are opinions. And some scholars of the era of astronomy preferred that it was on the ninth day and not on the twelfth day, so it is invalid from the historical aspect that it is on the twelfth day.
As for the Shari'ah aspect, it is invalid for reasons:
The first: That it is a worship that Allah and His Messenger and the Rightly Guided Caliphs, whom we were commanded to follow their Sunnah, did not prescribe.
If a claimant claims that it is prescribed in the Qur'an or the Sunnah or in the deed of the Rightly Guided Caliphs or the Companions, then he must provide evidence, for the proof is on the claimant, and he will not be able to find a way to that, meaning: he will not be able to find a way to bring one piece of evidence from the Book and the Sunnah or the saying of the Rightly Guided Caliphs or the Companions that it is Sunnah to celebrate the day of the birth of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.
Second: We say: This religious innovation is either true or false. If it is true, it necessitates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is either ignorant of the truth or knowledgeable of it and concealing it. Both matters are false. It is impossible to the utmost degree that the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is ignorant of something of the Shari'ah of Allah, or that he is knowledgeable of it but did not explain it to the Ummah. For the first possibility necessitates that he is ignorant of the Shari'ah while he is the owner of the Shari'ah, and the second possibility necessitates that he is concealing what Allah revealed to him, and he is far from that.
If he had been concealing what Allah revealed to him, he would have concealed the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. وَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ
[Al-Ahzab 33:37]
.
Third: We say: If it becomes clear that it is a religious innovation, then it is not permissible for anyone to establish it, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and if they followed their desires instead of the truth, and every person who thought that there is a prescription in it prescribed it, the Ummah would differ, and the religion would be torn apart, and every group would have a specific religion, and this is contrary to what the Islamic Shari'ah brought of the obligation of agreement on the word of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.
Fourth: We say that this religious innovation did not stop at merely gathering and sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), mentioning his virtues, his noble deeds, and his Shari'ah. Rather, they turned away from this to something else: to poems of praise that reach the extreme of exaggeration, indeed exceeding the nature of humans to the rights of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). These people who gather would sing the poem of al-Busiri, in which he addresses the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), saying:
"O most noble of creation, to whom shall I take refuge *** other than You when the great calamity befalls?
If You do not take my hand on the Day of Resurrection *** with pardon, then say: 'O slip of the foot!'
For from Your generosity comes the world and its hardship, *** and from Your knowledge comes the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."

Some scholars said: "If the matter is like this, then nothing remains for Allah, and Allah the Exalted is not the refuge in times of hardship and panic. Rather, it is the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who has no power over himself for benefit or harm except what Allah wills, who is the refuge. And this is the ultimate exaggeration from which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited us."
So these people who claim that they draw near to Allah through such celebrations, and that they are the lovers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), have in reality become those who distance themselves from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by associating with Him that for which He has not sent down any authority. There is no doubt that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would never be pleased with such a thing.
If they say: "The origin of this is the love of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and in order to show the Christians that we care for our Messenger as they cared for their Messenger, making his birth a festival!"
We say: If you are sincere in your love for Allah and His Messenger, then here is a just and fair measure, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ
[Ali 'Imran 3:31]
. Therefore, the more a person loves Allah, the more he follows the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the less he loves Allah, the less he follows the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). So if you see a man claiming to love Allah and His Messenger, but he does not adhere to the Shari'ah, know that he is a liar, because the love of Allah and His Messenger necessarily results in following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
The conclusion is that it is obligatory for the students of knowledge here in this Saudi Arabia and in other Islamic countries to clarify to the general public and to others that this celebration has no basis in the Sunnah, that it is a religious innovation, and that it only increases a person's distance from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because it legislates in the religion of Allah what is not part of it.
If someone asks: "Is not sending blessings upon the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed at all times?"
The answer is: Yes. Increase in sending blessings upon the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), for Allah will magnify your reward for it,
and whoever sends blessings upon him once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times
. But arranging it on a specific night, gathering for it, and reciting praises and high poems that reach the extreme of exaggeration—this is what is forbidden. We do not say: "Do not send blessings upon the Messenger." We say: "Increase in sending blessings." We do not say: "Do not love the Messenger." But we say: "Love the Messenger more than you love yourselves, and your faith is not complete except by that." But do not innovate in his religion what is not part of it.
So it is obligatory for the students of knowledge to clarify to people and say to them: "Engage in the correct, prescribed acts of worship. Remember Allah, send blessings upon the Prophet at all times, establish the prayer, give the zakah, and be kind to the Muslims at all times."
As for making a specific festival in the year, Allah the Exalted has not made in the year except three festivals only: 'Id al-Adha, 'Id al-Fitr, and the weekly festival, which is Jumu'ah. As for innovating other festivals, you are innovating in the religion of Allah what He has not prescribed.
Then Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:25]
:
for them is a reward لهم أجر
meaning: reward.
that is not cut off غير ممنون
meaning: not cut off, but rather it is continuous forever. The verses regarding the perpetuity of Paradise are numerous and well-known in the Book and the Sunnah, and they are not so difficult that we would recite them to you now, because they are clear, and praise be to Allah. So the reward of the Hereafter is never cut off. It is not like the world, where there is a time when trees bear fruit and a time when they do not, or a time when the earth grows and a time when it does not. No, the reward in it is permanent:
and they will have their provision therein, morning and afternoon.
[Maryam 19:62]
.
We ask Allah the Exalted to make us and you among the believers who do righteous deeds and avoid evil deeds. Indeed, He is Generous and Noble. And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
And I repeat at the beginning of the questions that this meeting will be suspended until the studies begin, if Allah wills. And now, to the questions.
