If he misses the first rak'ah of the prayer for rain, does he make it up as the first or the second?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Your Eminence, to complete the question!

The Shaykh : Which question?

The questioner : Regarding the prayer for rain, if he misses the first rak'ah, does he complete it as the second or as the first?

The Shaykh : This issue is based on a well-known scholarly disagreement: does the one praying behind the imam make up the beginning of his prayer or the end of his prayer?
The correct view is that he makes up the end of his prayer, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
And complete what you missed وما فاتكم فأتمّوا
. The disagreement becomes apparent if a person catches the last two rak'ahs of the midday prayer and stands to make up the missed ones: does he recite anything with al-Fatihah?
If we say that he makes up the beginning of his prayer, he recites whatever is easy of the Qur'an after al-Fatihah. If we say that he makes up the end of his prayer, he does not recite. The correct view is that he makes up the end of his prayer, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
And complete what you missed وما فاتكم فأتمّوا
. Also, if a person catches one rak'ah of the sunset prayer, he recites the first tashahhud after the first rak'ah that he makes up, is that not so?
If it were the beginning of his prayer, he would not recite the tashahhud. We would then say: pray the two rak'ahs that you make up without tashahhud, except for the last one. Based on this, if a person catches the second rak'ah of the prayer for rain or the festival prayer, and then stands to make up the missed ones, he does not say takbir in the second rak'ah that he makes up except five times only.

The questioner : .

The Shaykh : No.

The questioner : A continuation of this.

The Shaykh : No, no, it mends the break.
