Is there repentance for one who is afflicted with an illness from which recovery is not expected?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is there repentance for one who is afflicted with an illness from which recovery is not expected?

The Shaykh : What did you say?

The questioner : Is there repentance for one who is afflicted with an illness from which recovery is not expected?

The Shaykh : He says: Is there repentance for one who is afflicted with an illness from which recovery is not expected? That is, is the repentance of a person who has despaired of life valid? The answer is: Yes, the repentance of a person who has despaired of his life is valid, whether due to an illness such as cancer, for example, or because he is being presented for execution, such as a man who is to be executed in retaliation, even if the executioner is standing over him, or in the case of a married man who committed unlawful sexual intercourse and became liable to stoning, even if the stones have already been gathered to stone him. His repentance is valid, because Allah the Exalted accepts the repentance of a person as long as he has not reached the point of death, as Allah the Exalted said:
The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
[An-Nisa 4:17]
The meaning of His saying:
repent soon after يَتُوبُونَ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ
[An-Nisa 4:17]
But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," وَلَيْسَتِ التَّوْبَةُ لِلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ السَّيِّئَاتِ حَتَّى إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ إِنِّي تُبْتُ الْآنَ
[An-Nisa 4:18]
However, repentance must have five conditions: sincerity, regret for what was done, ceasing from it immediately, resolving not to return to it in the future, and that the repentance be at a time when it is accepted, meaning before death or before the sun rises from the west.
