The questioner : What are the things that are permissible for a woman and those that are not permissible regarding worship during menstruation? I ask for a detailed explanation of this.

The Shaykh : What is withheld from a woman among the acts of worship is the ritual prayer.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And fasting, by the consensus of the scholars. Also, it is not permissible for her to begin spiritual retreat in the mosque while she is menstruating, because she is not among those who are permitted to be in the mosque in that state, unlike the case where she begins menstruating while already in retreat. Also, it is not permissible for her to stay in the mosque, and it is not permissible for her to perform circumambulation of the Ka'bah according to the majority of the scholars. As for walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah, standing at 'Arafah, standing at Muzdalifah, and stoning the pillars, this is permissible and there is no blame on her for it. As for the remembrance of Allah, saying Allahu akbar, and the declaration of the oneness of Allah, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and speaking in the calling to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) without reciting the Qur'an, this is also permissible. As for reading the Qur'an, the scholars have differed on this, with two opinions. The correct view is that it is permissible—I mean that reading the Qur'an for a menstruating woman is permissible—because there is no authentic, explicit Sunnah prohibiting her from reading the Qur'an, and the original ruling is permissibility. However, she should not read the Qur'an except out of need, out of consideration for the scholarly disagreement.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : She also says.
