The Shaykh : In this hadith, there is the good emulation of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as they stood up when they saw him stand up.
And in it is evidence that the principle is to emulate his actions, even if we do not know the reason for them, because the Companions stood up when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and then they informed him that it was a Jewish one—meaning a Jewish funeral—and he said: Then he commanded standing up for a funeral procession when it passes by.
Jabir said that when a funeral passed by God’s messenger stood up [to show respect] and they stood up along with him. They told him it was a Jewish funeral and he replied, “Death is a fearful event, so when you see a funeral stand up.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)
