The Book of Friday Prayer, the Two Festivals, the Prayer for Rain, the Eclipse Prayer, and Funerals-09b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: And Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, and Layth narrated to us. And Muhammad ibn Rumh ibn al-Muhajir narrated to us, and the wording is his, and Layth narrated to us from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Waqid ibn 'Amr ibn Sa'd ibn Mu'adh that he said:
Nafi' ibn Jubayr saw me standing while we were at a funeral, and he had sat down waiting for the body to be placed. He said to me, "What is keeping you standing?" I said, "I am waiting for the body to be placed because of what Abu Sa'id al-Khudri relates." Nafi' said, "Mus'ud ibn al-Hakam narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and then sat down."

The Shaykh : The truth is that the hadith does not indicate what was objected to, because the apparent context is that he sat down waiting for the body to be placed. So it appears that he was following him. Look at al-Nawawi.
The student: In, oh Shaykh, another explanation.

The Shaykh : More complete?
The student: I see that sometimes in some places it becomes more complete.

The Shaykh : Who
The student: This is al-Qurtubi.

The Shaykh : Al-Mufhim.
The student: Al-Mufhim.

The Shaykh : Okay, let's see.
The reader: "His statement: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for the funeral and then sat down': Those who claim the abrogation of standing for the funeral have cited this narration as evidence. However, there is no correspondence between the claim and the evidence, for the claim is only the abrogation of standing upon seeing the funeral, whereas the context of the evidence is to prevent standing after the body has been lowered from the shoulders until it is placed in the grave."

The Shaykh : But this is it. In fact, the evidence is not this. The apparent meaning of the hadith is that he sat down waiting for the body to be placed. He said, "What is keeping you standing?" I said, "I am waiting for the body to be placed because of what Abu Sa'id al-Khudri relates." And Abu Sa'id had previously related that whoever follows it should not sit until it is placed. But also: where is it placed? Is it placed in the grave? It appears that it is placed in the grave, or if it has not been placed in a dug grave, until it is placed in the ground.
