The reciter: And Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Layth narrated to us. And Muhammad ibn Rumh narrated to us, saying: Al-Layth informed us. And Harimah narrated to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Yunus informed me. All of them narrated from Ibn Shihab with this chain of narration. In Yunus's narration, it is stated that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say. And Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Layth narrated to us. And Ibn Rumh narrated to us, saying: Al-Layth informed us, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, from Amir ibn Rabi'ah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
When any one of you sees a funeral and is not walking with it, let him stand up until it has passed him, or until (the body) is placed (in the grave) before if passes him.

The Shaykh : This hadith provides evidence that a person is commanded to stand when he sees a funeral procession. This is not to honor the funeral, but to emphasize the gravity of death and to remind the self. If we suppose that a funeral procession passes by a person while he is heedless, chatting with his companion, joking, and talking, it is as if he did not lift his head for the sake of death and did not see any harm in being heedless of it. This is not appropriate. Rather, he should stand to alert himself to death and its terror, and that it is the destiny of every living being. It is not to honor the funeral. For this reason, if a funeral procession passes by him, even that of a disbeliever, for example, he should stand, because the purpose is not honor. Or if the funeral of a man known for his open sinfulness passes by him, he should also stand. The apparent meaning of the command is that it is obligatory. The apparent meaning of the command is that it is obligatory, especially since it was given a reason, which is an important reason: reminding the self of death, which a person should be alarmed by. What indicates that the command is not for obligation will come, if Allah wills.
