The questioner : He also says that when people arrange the dates on their palm fronds and young shoots, they place some palm fiber in the large clusters so that people do not see them. Is this considered shirk (associating partners with Allah), may Allah protect us from it? What do you advise people to do regarding this? And is it permissible to pray behind these people, knowing that I would not be able to maintain the congregation if I did not pray behind them?

The Shaykh : This is not shirk (associating partners with Allah) if they cover them with this fiber out of fear of the evil eye.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : This is not shirk (associating partners with Allah), because the eyes of envious people are directed only at what is exceptional. If this thing is hidden, it is not exceptional in their eyes, and thus it becomes a cause for preventing the evil eye. If the cause is prescribed or perceived, then practicing it is not considered shirk (associating partners with Allah). The matters that Allah has made causes, either by what He revealed in His Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) or by what people have come to know of His divine decree, are lawful causes, and practicing them is not shirk (associating partners with Allah).

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Accordingly, there is nothing wrong with praying behind these people.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
