The Book of Hajj-09b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Hammad ibn 'Umar al-Bukrawi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, from 'Asim, from Abu Nu'ayrah, who said: I was with Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah when a man came to him and said: Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn al-Zubayr have differed regarding the two types of tamattu'. Jabir said:
We have been doing this during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him), and then 'Umar forbade us to do so, and we never resorted to them. فعلناهما مع رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم، ثمّ نهانا عنهما عمر، فلم نعد لهما
Sahih Muslim 1249
.

The Shaykh : His statement: "regarding the two types of tamattu'" means: tamattu' al-nisa' (temporary marriage) and tamattu' al-hajj (combining 'Umrah and Hajj). Tamattu' al-nisa' means temporary marriage. He said: We performed them with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). As for tamattu' al-nisa', it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade it, and said: It is forbidden until the Day of Judgment.
As for tamattu' al-hajj, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade it, as mentioned previously. His statement: "then 'Umar forbade us from them" is likely because he was not aware of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of tamattu' al-nisa', and he did not know of it except from 'Umar, so he said: 'Umar forbade us from them.
The explanation of the reason for 'Umar's prohibition of that has been mentioned previously.
