Benefits of the Hadith: (… then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Have you looked at her? For there is something in the eyes of the Ansar. He said: I have looked at her. He said: For how much did you marry her…?)

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This hadith contains what was previously mentioned, namely that it is recommended for the suitor to look at the woman he intends to marry so that he does not fall into what he dislikes after the contract is concluded. This is especially the case if the woman is from a people known for something considered a defect, whether in a man or a woman, in which case looking at her becomes more emphasized. Among the benefits of this hadith is also the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) disapproval of this man who married for four awaq of silver. The four awaq equal one hundred and sixty dirhams. One hundred and sixty Islamic dirhams is equivalent to approximately forty riyals in our currency, or something similar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disapproved of this, considering it excessive, as if the mahr at that time was small, and this was considered a lot. There is no doubt that whoever exceeds what people know to be the standard mahr harms himself and others, because people look at one another. If they see that this person has increased it, the second person increases it, and the third person increases it, and matters become aggravated. Another benefit of this hadith is that it is permissible for a person, if he is sent on a mission to collect charity, to take what is given to him and spend it on his needs. Yes.
