Explanation of the Book of Marriage-03

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: “And Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man who had married a woman: “Did you look at her?” He said: “No,” he said: “Go and look at her” أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لرجل تزوج امرأة : أنظرت إليها ؟ قال : لا، قال : اذهب فأنظر إليها
”
.
“Married” means he intended to marry, because if he had already married her by contract, there would have been no need to look at her. But the meaning of “married a woman” is that he intended to marry her.
He said:
Did you look at her? He said: No, he said: Go and look at her أنظرت إليها؟ ، قال: لا، قال: اذهب فانظر إليها
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:880
This indicates what we preferred in the first hadith: what is the command for? It is for recommendation and guidance. And it is incumbent upon a person, if he intends to marry a woman, to look at her, especially if she is from a people who are not of that beauty, or from a people who have a defect in their eyes, or in their noses, or in their mouths, or something similar. In that case, looking here is more emphatic than looking at a woman who is from a people who have beauty and are free from defects.
Now, if someone says: If I am not able to look at her, what do I do? Does the looking of another person suffice for my looking?
The answer: Yes, but we say: If you cannot look with your own eyes, then instruct someone to look, such as if there is a strong connection between you and her brother or another of her mahrams, you ask him to inform you of her characteristics. Or you send one of the women you trust to look and observe, then she informs you. But the woman sent must be trustworthy, because some women are not trustworthy. If she goes for the proposal and the woman’s family slips her what they slip, she comes to the suitor and says: “I saw the full moon,” while she is not suitable.
And we were told a story about one of the brothers who has soundness of heart, that he married one day, but the woman did not please him when he entered upon her. When he came to the mosque, and he used to speak sometimes to admonish the people, he said in a portion of his speech: “Beware of these matchmakers, beware of these matchmakers,” meaning those who propose. For she comes to you and says: “Her eyes are like this and her face is like this,” meaning large and beautiful, and you think she is like the beautiful woman, and she describes her with a description I do not remember. When he entered upon her, he found her to be a dark, ugly cat. And the truth is that it is necessary to send a trustworthy woman so that you are not deceived.
So if someone says: Even if I sent a trustworthy woman, eyes differ and desires differ, and how many a woman is beautiful to one person and not beautiful to another, is that not so?
We said: Correct, this is correct, and every soul has a taste. But if we cannot have the most complete, this is better than nothing. If we cannot have the most complete, that a person looks with his own eyes, this is better than nothing. In any case: this hadith is added to what preceded and serves as a witness to it, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Go and look at her اذهب فانظر إليها
.
He said: “And from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And a man should not ask for the hand of a girl who is already engaged to his Muslim brother, unless the first suitor gives her up, or allows him to ask for her hand. لا يخطب أحدكم على خطبة أخيه حتى يترك الخاطب قبله أو يأذن له
