The story of the woman who offered herself to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the benefits derived from it.

The Shaykh : And I am mentioning to you a story from which we should take a lesson, in the hadith of Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) . One of the specific characteristics of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he could marry a woman by her offering herself, without a mahr, without a wali, and without witnesses. The woman would come and say, "I offer myself to you," and if he accepted, she would be his wife. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ahzab 33:50] — meaning, and We have made lawful for you a believing woman — [Al-Ahzab 33:50]. When the woman offered herself to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he had no desire for her, so she sat and prolonged her sitting. Then a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry me to her if you have no need for her." Look at the etiquette, the etiquette of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). When she sat and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept her, the situation indicated that the Messenger had no need for her, but it was possible that he did have a need for her, so he said, "Marry me to her if you have no need for her." He asked, "What will you give her as mahr?" Because a marriage contract is not valid without a mahr, for Allah said: [An-Nisa 4:24]. So a mahr is necessary. He said, "My izar (lower garment); I will give her my izar as mahr." Sahl ibn Sa'd said, "He had no rida' (upper garment), meaning he had nothing on his body except his izar covering his lower parts." The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "How can it be an izar? If you give it to her, you will have no izar, and if you keep it, she will have no mahr." This is the meaning of what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. "Go and look around." So he went. He said, "I found nothing." He said, "Seek even an iron ring." A ring of iron to give the woman. So he sought but did not find. Did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) order him to borrow? He did not say "borrow"; he said, "Seek even an iron ring." He said, "I cannot find one." He said, "Do you have anything from the Qur'an?" He said, "Yes, I have such and such a surah." He said: Sunan Abi Dawud 2111Sahih (Al-Albani), meaning he taught her the Qur'an that he memorized. And the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not guide him to borrow, even though the poor person in our time borrows for marriage to make his mahr equal to the mahr of the rich, and he chooses from the wedding palaces a palace larger than his status. And this is undoubtedly foolishness. Therefore, I warn my brothers whom Allah has decreed, by His wisdom (Mighty and Majestic), to be poor, I warn them from taking borrowing lightly, for that is a mistake. [An-Nur 24:33] How many types did we mention of the categories of zakah? Gold and silver, paper currency, and debts? As they are? Four, my brother.
If we count gold and silver as one, it becomes three, and if we count them as two, it becomes four.
That a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I offer myself to you, O Messenger of Allah."
O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you [of captives] and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you and a believing woman
يا أيها النبي إنا أحللنا لك أزواجك اللاتي آتيت أجورهن وما ملكت يمينك مما أفاء الله عليك وبنات عمك وبنات عماتك وبنات خالك وبنات خالاتك اللاتي هاجرن معك وامرأة مؤمنةif she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her, [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers
And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property
I have given you her in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know.
But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty.
If we count gold and silver as one, it becomes three, and if we count them as two, it becomes four.
