Benefits of the Hadith: (… I heard Jabir say: We used to practice coitus interruptus during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).)

The Shaykh : As for the statement that we used to do this during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this is elevated in ruling, and it contains clear evidence that whatever was done during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and for which no prohibition was revealed is permissible. For this reason, scholars often cite the fact that this was done during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as proof. Some scholars, however, object to this. For example, the story of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to pray the 'Isha' prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then return to his people to pray that prayer with them; for him it was a voluntary prayer, and for them it was an obligatory one. Some scholars cited this as proof that it is permissible for one who is obligated to pray to pray behind one who is praying voluntarily, because this was done during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Other scholars objected, saying that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know about it. What makes us know that he knew about it? The answer was given in two ways: The first is that it is unlikely that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know about it, given that the matter was brought to his attention regarding his lengthening of the recitation, and he advised and admonished them. The second is that even if the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know about it, Allah knows about it, and Allah did not leave anyone in a state of falsehood. Therefore, Allah the Exalted said:
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech يستخفون من الناس ولا يستخفون من الله وهو معهم إذ يبيتون ما لا يرضى من القول
[An-Nisa 4:108]
, exposing them in that they conceal what they say and plot it. This indicates that everything that occurred during the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is a proof. As for the claim that the Messenger did not know, we say that if the Messenger did not know, then the Sender of the Messenger, the Exalted and Majestic, knew. Yes, yes?

The questioner : Shaykh, may Allah bless you…
