He also says: I would like to ask about gold for women. My aunt asked me about her gold bangles and a set of buttons, and that they are accustomed to wearing them.

The questioner : This message reached us from Jeddah, sent by the listener who wrote his name and requested that we refer to him by the following initials: K, A, S, from Jeddah. Thank you. In his message, at the beginning of this letter, he says: It is a pleasure for me to extend my sincere thanks to you all, and may Allah reward you with the best reward for us and for all my Muslim brothers, for the blessed efforts you make regarding the issues of Muslims. He also says: I would like to ask about gold for women. My aunt asked me about her gold bangles and a set of buttons, and that they are accustomed to wearing them on special occasions and at weddings in special clothing. She is inquiring whether she has to pay zakah on her gold and the jewelry she has every year, or if there is nothing required in that regard?

The Shaykh : The correct opinion among the scholars is that she is obligated to pay zakah on it if these bangles and what accompanies them reach the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah) in total. The nisab is twenty mithqals of gold, which weighs eleven Saudi gold dinars and three-sevenths of a dinar. If this amount is reached, she must pay zakah on it every year, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection would come, plates of fire would be beaten out for him; these would then be heated in the fire of Hell and his sides, his forehead and his back would be cauterized with them. ما من صاحب ذهب ولا فضة لا يؤدي منها حقها إلا إذا كان يوم القيامة صفّحت صفائح من نار فأحمي عليها في نار جهنم فيُكوى بها جنبه وجبينه وظهره
Sahih Muslim 987a
The hadith. And the right of gold and silver wealth is zakah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And there are other hadiths in the Sunan, such as the hadith of 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb:
A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and on her daughter's hand were two thick bracelets of gold. He said: Do you pay zakah on this? She said: No. He said: Would you like Allah to brand you with them on the Day of Resurrection as two bracelets of fire? So she took them off and threw them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: They are for Allah and His Messenger.
This hadith has a strong chain of narration, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated in *Bulugh al-Maram*, and it has other corroborating narrations. Therefore, the correct opinion among the scholars is that zakah is obligatory on gold and silver jewelry if it reaches the nisab. Your aunt must pay zakah every year on the gold she has, whether she wears it constantly, on special occasions, or does not wear it but keeps it for lending.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
