And I am with him if he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him in My heart. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than them. If he draws near to Me a hand's breadth, I draw near to him an arm's length.

The reciter:
and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7405
.

The Shaykh : His statement:
I am to my slave as he thinks of Me
Sahih al-Bukhari 7505
means as it came in another hadith:
If he thinks of Me good, it is for him, and if he thinks of Me evil, it is for him.
But when is it good for a person to think well of his Lord? It is good when he does a deed that deserves good. Then he thinks well of his Lord. For example: he does a righteous deed and thinks his Lord will accept it. He repents from a sin he committed and thinks his Lord will accept it. He does not look at his deed and his state and think ill based on what he has, but he looks at the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and thinks well. As for one who has nothing with which to think well, then thinking well is bankruptcy. Therefore, it came in the hadith:
The clever person ids the one who subjugates his soul, and works for what is after death. And the incapable is the one who follows his desires and merely hopes in Allah.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2459Da'if (Darussalam)
So thinking well must be in a place that is receptive, by doing a righteous deed and thinking well of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that He will accept it. He repents and thinks well of Allah that Allah will accept his repentance. As for persisting in disobedience and saying, "I think well of Allah that Allah will forgive me," committing zina morning and evening and drinking intoxicants morning and evening and saying, "I think well of Allah," poor man, how can you think well of Allah? Repent to Allah and think well of Allah that Allah will accept your repentance. So when is thinking well of Allah? When it is in a receptive place, at the time of a righteous deed or repentance from a bad deed, then he thinks well of Allah that He will accept his repentance and his deed. He said:
and I am with him if He remembers Me
Sahih al-Bukhari 7405
The companionship here is a special companionship that implies firmness, support, victory, and other implications of this special companionship. So whenever you remember Allah, know that Allah is with you, whether you remember Him with your heart, your tongue, or your limbs. Know that Allah is with you. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful.
[Al-Anfal 8:45]
until you attain success in steadfastness and tranquility. Therefore, when a person remembers his Lord from his heart, he forgets everything. And I am not saying he forgets everything as the Sufis forget, who annihilate themselves from witnessing the other. When one of them stands to worship, he forgets everything, so he is heedless, in his claim, of the Worshipped regarding the worship, and of the Remembered regarding the remembrance, and of the Necessary Being regarding the Possible Being. He forgets everything until some of them reach the point of madness, flailing about, flailing about, saying, "I have pitched my tent over Hellfire." How did you pitch your tent over Hellfire? Is this the speech of a sane person or a madman? Madness. And he says, "Glory be to Me, Glory be to Me," disappearing sometimes, "Glory be to Me, Glory be to Me," and he says, "There is no one in the robe but Allah," meaning himself. So they reach the point of foolishness, madness, and delirium. So whenever you remember your Lord, Allah is with you with victory, support, firmness, and the removal of loneliness. So when you feel lonely at night and you want the loneliness to be removed from you, remember Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because with the remembrance of Allah, you have everything, and everything becomes small to you.
