The Meaning of the Hadith: “Whoever draws near to Me a hand’s breadth”
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the meaning of:Sahih Muslim 2687a?
Answer:
This is an authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):: I am with My servant’s expectation of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s breadth, I draw near to him an arm’s length. If he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a cubit. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him running. This is from the Lord encouraging the servants to remember Him and to hasten to His obedience.
And its interpretation is left to Him. No one knows the manner of this drawing near to Him (Exalted and Majestic is He) except He. It is like what we say regarding His rising above the Throne, His descent, His anger, and His mercy. All these attributes are befitting Him, and He is not likened to His creation in them, and no one knows their modality except He. So we do not ask how He draws near, nor how He comes, walks, or runs. We do not ask how that is, but rather we say it is in the manner befitting Allah. However, one of the fruits of this and one of its implications is that He is swifter in bringing good to us and more merciful to us (Exalted and Majestic is He).
What is the meaning of:
Abu Dharr reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, stated: " He who comes with goodness, there are in store for him ten like those and even more than those: 'And he who comes with vice, ' it is only for that that he is called to account. I even forgive him (as I like) and he who draws close to Me by the span of a palm I draw close to him by the cubit, and he who draws close to Me by the cubit I draw close to him by the space (covered) by two hands, and he who walks towards Me I rush towards him, and he who meets Me in the state that his sins fill the earth, but not associating anything with Me, I would meet Him with the same (vastness) of pardon (on My behalf)." This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Waki'.
