Also, she has another question, asking whether it is permissible for a woman to take a bath or wash her hair when she is menstruating, because she does not carry impurity during this period?

The questioner : Also, she has another question, asking whether it is permissible for a woman to take a bath or wash her hair when she is menstruating, because she does not carry impurity during this period?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is permissible for her to clean herself by washing her body, hair, and so on. In fact, if she is in a state of major ritual impurity, it is recommended for her to take a bath, even if she does not benefit from this bath in any way, because she cannot pray while menstruating. However, this is to remove the effect of the major ritual impurity from her.

The questioner : Yes, this message came from Yasin Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Halim in the Iraqi Republic.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : In the province of Nineveh, the district of al-Shura. He says in his message: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he yawned, place his right hand over his mouth, or his left hand, or both hands together over his pure mouth?

The Shaykh : Before I answer this question, I referred in my answer to the previous question to the issue of the major ritual impurity of a menstruating woman.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : I am afraid that someone might understand from that that it is permissible to have intercourse with a menstruating woman. This understanding is not valid, because major ritual impurity can befall a woman through a wet dream. If a woman has a wet dream and sees the fluid, it is obligatory for her to take a bath, just as it is obligatory for a man.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Also, it is possible that her husband had intercourse with her before she saw the menstruation, and then the menstruation comes to her before she takes a bath from that major ritual impurity. In that case, we tell her: Take a bath from this major ritual impurity, even if you are menstruating.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Likewise, it is possible that the husband enjoys her while she is menstruating without intercourse, meaning without sexual intercourse. If a man enjoys his wife during menstruation in any way other than the private parts, it is permissible. In this state, she may discharge fluid due to desire, and the bath becomes obligatory for her. So we tell her: She should take a bath before she becomes pure from the menstruation, to remove this major ritual impurity.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : These are three scenarios we have described in which a woman may be in a state of major ritual impurity while she is menstruating.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
