The questioner : He also has a third and final question, saying: We went, my friends and I, for 'Umrah in Ramadan, and the day we arrived in Makkah was a Friday before the midday prayer. We performed tawaf around the Ka'bah, then sat down to pray Jumu'ah. After the imam began the khutbah, a friend of mine was sitting next to me, so I spoke to him to ask about some of the remaining rites of 'Umrah. But he did not respond to me, so I stayed silent and he did not speak to me. After we returned to our city, I learned that one who speaks while the imam is delivering the khutbah has no Jumu'ah. Do I have to make up the Jumu'ah prayer as Zuhr? Please advise us; may Allah reward you with good. Thank you.
The Shaykh : The benefit in this is that it is not permissible for a person to speak while the imam is delivering the khutbah. Whoever speaks while the imam is delivering the khutbah has engaged in idle talk, and whoever engages in idle talk has no Jumu'ah. The meaning of negating his Jumu'ah is that he is deprived of its reward and virtue, not that it does not suffice for him. Accordingly, your Jumu'ah prayer is sufficient, and it is not obligatory for you to repeat it; rather, it is not prescribed for you to repeat it, because the intent of negating the Jumu'ah is negating its virtue and reward. Nevertheless, we say to you, O brother questioner, since you were ignorant of this matter when you spoke, there is no sin upon you, and you do not miss this virtue. For Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] So Allah the Exalted said: "You have done it," as established in Sahih Muslim. Accordingly, your Jumu'ah is complete, and you have obtained its reward, because when you spoke to your brother, you were ignorant of the prohibition.
The questioner : Yes.
