The reciter: And Sahl ibn Uthman al-Askari narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Zakariyya narrated to us, saying: Sa'd ibn Tariq narrated to us, saying: Sa'd ibn Ubaydah al-Sulami narrated to me from Ibn Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), i. e. Allah (alone) should be worshipped, and (all other gods) beside Him should be (categorically) denied. Establishment of prayer, the payment of Zakat, Pilgrimage to the House, and the fast of Ramadan بني الإسلام على خمسٍ ، على أن يعبد الله ، ويكفر بما دونه ، وإقام الصّلاة ، وإيتاء الزّكاة ، وحجّ البيت ، وصوم رمضان
Sahih Muslim 16b

The Shaykh : His saying: "what is other than Him" means what is besides Him, and everyone besides Him is less than He is. So here it means "besides" and also "less than."
