The questioner : This is a letter sent by one of the listeners of the program *Nur 'ala al-Darb*, the student Husayn Bilqasim al-Faqih from the Secondary Teachers’ Training Institute in al-Qunfudhah. In his letter, he says: I have a paternal aunt, my father’s full sister, who says that she breastfed my brother, who is older than me, along with one of her daughters or one of her three daughters, specifically her eldest daughter. She did not clarify the number of times she breastfed my older brother, except to say that it was about seven or eight times, or more than eight. She did not breastfeed me along with them. She has married her two eldest daughters to someone other than my brother, from a different family. Is it permissible for me to propose to her third daughter, who is the youngest? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good for us?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is permissible for you to marry the third daughter, your maternal aunt’s daughter from whom your brother was breastfed, because the prohibition of breastfeeding does not extend to the siblings of the breastfed child. Yes, if the third daughter you wish to propose to has been breastfed by your mother with a breastfeeding that establishes kinship, which is five breastfeedings or more before weaning, then she is not permissible for you because she is your sister.

The Shaykh : As for if she has not been breastfed by your mother, and you have not been breastfed by her mother, then she is lawful for you, even if your brother was breastfed by her mother. Yes.
