The questioner : His third and final question states: I am a young man, twenty-three years old. He says that when he reached the age of ten, he prayed and then fasted, and when he reached the age of eighteen, he abandoned prayer and fasting.

The Shaykh : There is no power and no strength

The questioner : In his second or twenty-third year, he repented to Allah the Exalted and turned to Allah, and he continued to pray and fast. What is obligatory for me to do as expiation for those past years of prayer and fasting, and all the obligations of Allah’s religion upon the Muslim?

The Shaykh : Nothing is obligatory upon you. Rather, what is obligatory for you now is to rectify your deeds and be upright in the remainder of your life, for repentance wipes out what came before it. Allah the Exalted said:
(53) Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (54) And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped. (55) And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,
[Az-Zumar 39:53-55]
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, it is not obligatory for you to make up what you missed in the years in which you intentionally abandoned acts of worship without an excuse.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
