Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "As he said:
What differentiates between the lawful and the unlawful is (beating) the Daff and raising the voices
Sunan Ibn Majah 1896Hasan (Darussalam)
The distinction between them is required in appearance, for the distinction by belief and action is achieved without the turban. If it were not also required in appearance, there would be no benefit in it. This is like the distinction between men and women, which was required in both appearance and reality
The Prophet (ﷺ) cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women
Sunan Abi Dawud 4097Sahih (Al-Albani)
And he denied the effeminate man because he was a man imitating in appearance one of a different sex, and also "
.
The student: One of a different sex

The Shaykh : Yes, in our copy it is "one of a different sex."
The reader: In my copy it says: "In A and B and T, one of a different sex".

The Shaykh : Yes, very well.
The reader: "Also, from Abu Ghatfan al-Mari, who said: I heard 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say:
When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted on the Day of 'Ashura and ordered its fasting, they said: O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians hold in high regard. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the coming year arrives, if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth day. He said: The coming year did not arrive until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away
Muslim narrated it in his *Sahih*.
Imam Ahmad narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Fast on the Day of 'Ashura and differ from the Jews in it, and fast a day before it, or a day after it
.
Sa'id narrated it with the chain, and its wording is:
Fast on the Day of 'Ashura and differ from the Jews, and fast a day before it, or a day after it
The hadith was narrated by Ibn Abi Layla from Dawud "
.

The Shaykh : In my copy it is "a day before it and a day after it." What do you have?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : In both places.
The student: ...
The reader: Here in my copy it says, O Shaykh, in the verification: "In A and B and T, it says: and a day after it, which is an error. And in the printed edition, a day before it or a day after it. And in the *Musnad* as I have noted it".

The Shaykh : What did I note?
The reader: I noted "or."

The Shaykh : "Or," in both places?
The reader: In both places.

The Shaykh : It appears that it must differ
fasts a day before or after it
Sahih al-Bukhari 1985
. Okay, I placed "or" in the first wording by independent reasoning, not by narration.
The reader: "The hadith was narrated by Ibn Abi Layla from Dawud ibn 'Ali from his father from his grandfather Ibn 'Abbas. So reflect on this: The Day of 'Ashura is an excellent day that expiates the past year. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted it and ordered its fasting and encouraged it. Then, when it was said to him before his passing: It is a day that the Jews and Christians hold in high regard, he ordered to differ from them by adding another day to it, and he resolved to do so.
For this reason, the scholars, among them Imam Ahmad, recommended fasting Tasu'a and 'Ashura, and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) explained it thus.
Sa'id ibn Mansur said: Sufyan narrated to us from 'Amr ibn Dinar that he heard 'Ata' that he heard Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say:
Fast on the ninth and the tenth, and differ from the Jews
Also, from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) "
.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: In my copy: the Jews and the Christians

The Shaykh : In our copy, only the Jews.
