We see in recent years that some pilgrims are joking around in the Sa'i area while performing Sa'i, and some of them are laughing or making noise at one another. What is the ruling on such behavior in the Sa'i area?

The questioner : This is a message we received from Abdullah ibn Abdullah from Buraydah in the Qassim region. He says: We see in recent years that some pilgrims are running or joking around in the Sa'i area while performing Sa'i, and some of them, for example, are laughing or making noise at one another. What is the ruling on such behavior in the Sa'i area?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Sa'i is one of the rituals of Hajj, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them إن الصفا والمروة من شعائر الله فمن حج البيت أو اعتمر فلا جناح عليه أن يطوّف بهما
[Al-Baqarah 2:158]
It is one of the rituals of Allah prescribed in Hajj and 'Umrah, and it is an act of worship among the acts of worship. What is fitting for a Muslim when he is in an act of worship is to be dignified and to be humble before Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), keeping in mind the greatness of the One to whom he is offering worship, and keeping in mind thereby the emulation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Going round the House (the Ka'bah), running between as-Safa and lapidation of the pillars are meant for the remembrance of Allah. إنما جعل الطواف بالبيت وبالصفا والمروة ورمي الجمار لإقامة ذكر الله
Sunan Abi Dawud 1888Da'if (Al-Albani)
So, a person playing around, laughing, frolicking, and making noise, even if this does not invalidate his Sa'i, it diminishes it greatly. It may even reach the level of invalidation if he does so out of disrespect for this sacred site or this ritual, in which case this act of worship may become invalid for him. For this reason, it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Tawaf around the House is prayer, except that Allah has permitted talking in it. So, whoever talks, let him not talk except with good. الطواف بالبيت صلاة إلا أن الله أباح فيه الكلام فمن تكلم فلا يتكلم إلا بخير
The important point is that talking does not invalidate Sa'i, but a person should not talk except with good, just as in Tawaf.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
