Benefits of the Hadith: (Eat from the sides of it, and do not eat from the middle of it, for the blessing descends in the middle of it).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Among the benefits of the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had as their custom to honor the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by sending him food, due to his saying:
A dish was brought أتي بقصعة
, because it appears that this dish came from people other than his household, rather, it was brought by strangers, though it is possible it was from his household, but it is well known that it was the custom of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to send food and milk to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), because he was the most beloved person to them after Allah the Exalted.
And among the benefits of this hadith: the indication, indeed the prescription, of eating from the sides of the dish, due to his saying:
Eat from the sides of it كلوا من جوانبها
.
Is the command obligatory?
We say that the apparent reasoning indicates that the command is obligatory, because he said:
for the blessing descends in the middle of it فإن البركة تنزل في وسطها
Bulugh al-Maram 8:99
, so if you eat from the middle, the blessing is removed, and it is known that removing the blessing is a type of punishment, and there is no punishment except for leaving an obligatory duty, so if there is scholarly consensus that it is not obligatory, we have no deviation from it, because it is not possible for us to contradict scholarly consensus.
And if there is a view in the issue that it is obligatory, meaning: that eating from the sides is obligatory and that eating from the middle of the dish is forbidden, then this is the view that the hadith requires.
Before we move on to this benefit: an exception is made if there is a need to eat from the top, such as if the sides are hot and the top is cold, and a person cannot eat the hot part, and this is common in what is known among us as the favorite dish, what is it, we people of al-Qasim?
The student: Mutaziz.

The Shaykh : No, no, it is something other than Mutaziz, it is something called: al-Hinani, al-Hinani is very hot at the bottom, if you eat it from the sides it is difficult, and its top is cold, because it consists of dates mashed with bread, it is heated over the fire and then oil is put in it, and if it were not that winter has passed and it is one of the winter dishes, Allah would have made it easy for us to taste it, yes, in any case, if, yes?
The student: It is permissible in summer.

The Shaykh : It is permissible in summer, hehehe.
Well, I say: if there is a need to eat from the top, there is nothing wrong with it, there is no blame on him.
And among the benefits of this hadith: that there are matters that the intellects do not grasp, meaning: among the matters that revelation brought are matters that the intellects do not grasp, and that is: that the blessing is in the middle of the dish, because we do not know about this, had the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not informed us of it, we would not have known anything about this.
And among the benefits of this hadith: that eating and drinking, even though they are in accordance with nature and disposition, have etiquettes, and this has been mentioned in the principles of jurisprudence, we said: among the natural, dispositional things are those that have etiquettes, it is not prescribed in itself because it is a confirmation of nature, but it has etiquettes, such as: eating and sleeping, because sleeping is a confirmation of nature and eating is likewise, but among the characteristics of this thing is what is recommended, such as sleeping on the right side, yes.
And among the benefits of this hadith: that it is necessary to seek the blessing, and to preserve it, and that it is not necessary to do what removes it, is that so? Yes, and among that: measuring food when it is being consumed, for it is among the things that remove the blessing, for example: if a person has food of dates or grain or otherwise, the best is that he takes his provision from it every day without measuring, if it is measured, the blessing is removed from it, as came in the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):
That she had food and she used to eat from it and spend from it, and she did not find any decrease in it, she said: so she measured it one day أنه كان لها طعام وكانت تأكل منه وتنفق منه، ولم تجد فيه نقصاً قالت: فكلته ذات يوم
meaning she wanted to see what remained of it,
And it was consumed quickly ففني بسرعة
: the blessing was removed from it, the reason for this is apparent, because if you measure it, you have a type of reliance on it, by saying for example: by Allah, there are ten sa' remaining, for example a lot, so you rely on it to some extent, and if you do not measure it and you start spending, you spend, but your reliance is on whom?
On Allah more, so for this reason the blessing is removed from it if it is measured, because it relies on the person.
And if he takes and spends and says: Allah the Exalted says:
O son of Adam, spend. I will spend on you. يا ابن آدم أنفق أنفق عليك
Sahih Muslim 993a
, this becomes stronger in reliance and trust in Allah the Exalted, yes, we take the new hadith of Abu Hurayrah now.
